Riley is an experienced insurance lawyer and litigator, specialising in representing insurers and their policyholders in professional and general liability disputes. Riley regularly defends claims in all Australian jurisdictions including the Federal Court. Riley advises insurers on policy coverage, and acts for them in indemnity disputes. He also represents insurers in recovery proceedings.

Riley’s experience includes:

• Financial lines:
  • Representing insurers and their policy holders including health practitioners, building and construction professionals, accountants, owners corporation managers, real estate agents and IT professionals in litigated matters before the Federal, Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Courts, and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
  • Representing health practitioners in disciplinary matters and complaints before their boards, and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Management liability, including representing insurers and their policyholders before Royal Commissions.
• Providing policy coverage advice to insurers, and acting for them in indemnity disputes particularly in relation to financial lines and general insurance.
• Representing insurers in recovery proceedings across a range of jurisdictions, with a particular focus on property recovery claims.

What do you focus on when working on a claim?

In addition to the law, I believe that it is crucial to develop a detailed understanding of the facts and what commercial or other factors are driving the parties. In my experience, identifying these will provide great assistance to our clients in understanding their legal and strategic position in a claim.

What should clients expect from you?

My clients can expect in me a lawyer who listens and understands their business or profession, gets across the facts and the law, will help develop a defence/claim strategy early, and will ultimately give them an opinion with recommendations on how to proceed.
